It is good to be surprised what is in that tire box. It is also good to have ready replacements for your goathead ridden uv deteriorated stock...

Vittoria tigrecross. They are my all time favorite cross tire. If you use them on the road to get to the trail, the middle nubs wear down to nothing and they roll beautifully on roads and harpack and still grip pretty well in loose stuff and when cornering. When I lived in oakland and did virtually all my mileage (commute and cross and mountain biking) on my single speed cross bike, those were the tires I rode. That particular tire may be from 1996. So I am a bit reluctant to use it, the tread is getting a bit hard.
