Whoops,

Long time no post. Ran out of camera batteries and was attempting to put my creativity to the thesis this week. Mosca is as yowly and love demanding as ever. I sit here looking at the return of the cold grey sky after 4 days of brilliant sunshine. And I have nothing new but the pictures of this nice weird beetle that made its way around the porch for three days. I dub it the "Greater Pojaque Ridgeback Beetle" if'n it is not named yet.

My kids found this bg, so I also was trying to ID it using the internet. I named it the ridgeback beetle, and found your site. Later I ID'ed it as a Wheel bug,
Arilus cristatus

Cool,
Thanks for the info! I think wheel bug is a terrible name. You and I had the right idea. Ridgeback beetle....

I have a story very much the same as Anonymous. I found this beautiful snouty, spikey bug and was trying to identify it through search engines. After several fails...I entered ridgeback beetle and found you and your bug.

Wheel bug? Ok. Whatever.

Thank you!!

Same here. My daughter wanted me to "google it" and my first try was "beetle ridge back" which brought me here. Wheel Bug... Looks more like a gear. Let's give it a third name: Steampunk Beetle!
